Dan Sferra has been enjoying his retirement by spending time with his grandchildren, family and pets.

But, soon he will return to a place he is very familiar with, Warren Council chambers. He served as a councilman for eight years and a mayor for 16.

Voters on Tuesday in Warren elected Sferra to one of three council at large seats. He will join incumbents Bob Dean and Helen Rucker.

Sferra said Wednesday he is looking forward to returning to council and helping make a positive impact on the city.

"I have been involved since 1971," Sferra said, as he relaxed in his Eastland Avenue home. "Warren has been good to my kids and now to my grandkids, and I think I have something I can offer."

Mayor Mike O'Brien and Councilman Bob Dean both agree with Sferra.

"It is always good to have a former mayor assisting council and assisting the city, and I am l am looking forward to the arrangment," O'Brien said.

Dean noted that when Sferra was mayor the economic situation in the city was much different, thousands were working at Delphi and WCI. There are now less than a thousand employed at Delphi and WCI - which is now Severstal - has been idled for almost a year.

"Things have changed," Dean said. "He is going to see new things he didn't see. I think being in all that time he will bring some experience that will be beneficial to all of us."

Sferra said he already knows what he wants to do first.

"I think we have to look not just at six months down the road but one to two years in our water and waste water departments," Sferra said. "We have to looking at these things now."
