School is back in session at Youngstown State University.
New and returning students made their way across campus today for the first day of classes. YSU kicked off the new academic year with its Welcome Week of "heroic" proportions.
"The students are really behind planning this event," said Joy Polkabla Byers, assistant director of programs. "They sit down, we meet weekly all summer long, getting things going, brainstorming ideas. I think what the most exciting part is that they actually see it unfold this week and all their hard work come to play."
The superhero-themed week runs during the first week of classes. Polkabla Byers said the program is designed to get new students acclimated with campus and the resources offered there.
"I think one of the big things is that we want students to belong, make this their home away from home," Polkabla Byers said. "So they can just come to classes and leave or they can get involved find opportunities to make new friends, get new jobs on campus that could help them jobs when they graduate."
YSU's Weeks of Welcome will end with the first home football game against Butler on Sept. 11.
