Thor and Sadie are lucky to be alive.

The two dogs survived a fall from the Interstate 680 overpass onto Midlothian Boulevard on Monday afternoon.

"Thor, the larger Akita, did have a bruised lung, but he's doing much better today," said Talia Musolino, office manager at Animal Charity Humane Society. "And Sadie, the other dog, who actually we were more worried about, she's actually doing really well. Her x-rays came out completely clear."

But just 24 hours after the incident, Jaime Jones, the dogs' owner, said her animals are still really sore.

Jones said she's extremely thankful for everyone that was on scene Monday afternoon, including the witnesses, the Boardman police officers, and Animal Charity. Thanks to them, her dogs are recovering, but she hopes people continue to fight the animal abuse occurring in the area.

Musolino said animal abuse extends well beyond the well publicized cases like this one, and the recent one involving two bound and gagged puppies.

"Its just an ongoing fight for us," Musolino said.

In 2011, Animal Charity responded to 1,200 calls and they took in 350 dogs and cats, most neglected or abandoned.

"We actually had last week, the day the two puppies were found downtown, we had a dog left in our back cage," said Musolino. "Middle of the day. We were full in here and someone just came up, abandoned their dog and left."

Humane agents said if you can no longer care for your dogs, you should contact area rescue groups for help or advice. If you witness abuse, like the individuals did Monday afternoon, you should contact Animal Charity or the police.

unless and until we get stronger laws and punisment for these creatures (the people not the dogs) this won't end. ohio is one of four states with the weakest animal abuse laws in the country. it's a disgrace!!
