A mixed breed pit bull Wednesday was found shot to death in a plastic garbage can that had been tossed over the side of a ravine in Youngstown.

According to Youngstown police reports, the medium-sized black and brown dog was found by a man and his wife who were picking up trash in the Ohio Avenue and Tod Lane area on the city's North Side Tuesday. They told police they saw a blue plastic garbage can 30 feet down the embankment of the ravine just south of the intersection.

The dog was partially visible within the can, reports state. A deputy dog warden and a humane agent retrieved the animal from the ravine and found a single gunshot in the dog's left shoulder.

The dog was wearing a collar, but there was no tag or identifier on it, reports state.

maybe this poor animal lost a dog fight and this was his punishment. there is way too much human garbage in this valley.

Bullets can be a cheap, effective, and humane (quick) means to end a suffering animal's life, but there seems to be much more to this story than a dead dog. Dumping the body suggests that this was not the shooter's dog. Perhaps this individual has a fear or hatred of the breed (pit bull mix) or shot the dog over some dispute with the dog's owner.

Sorry but in my opinion I have no respect for humans anymore. Humans can sometimes protect themselves and know what is going on. Animals do not. Do not take that out of context, I know how you people are on here. There are a lot of laws protecting humans, but never go in effect half the time (Not our fault). Animals have no laws protecting them. If you want to go and shoot a defenseless creature then it just shows how much of a coward you really are. You are not going to read about a baby being thrown over a ravine in the everyday paper. There has been more animal abuse in the news lately it is disgusting. Also, most violence can stem from animal abuse. If a person can go and abuse an animal, who's to say the won't abuse humans as well?

The sad thing is that the dead dog story will get more comments than any dead person story. People will show more outrage, and call for more laws too.
