Agents with the Columbiana County Humane Society are hoping to find a new home for Holly the dog. She was found earlier this week severely injured and fighting for her life in a New Waterford home.
Holly is a 6-year-old Beagle/Jack Terrier mix. She acts like any normal dog, but last week that was far from the case. She was abused by her owner.
"She was living in a rabbit hutch, outside," said Heather Jurina, Columbiana Humane Society Manager.
In the hutch, Holly broke her hind-leg after it got tangled in some wire. Instead of taking her to the vet, the owner hid her. That's when Holly's instincts kicked in.
"Just part of a survival technique, she chewed off her leg where it was broken," Jurina said.
A neighbor called Humane Agents, who immediately took the dog once they found her. A veterinarian closed the wound for now, but Holly's got a long week ahead of her.
"We are afraid that she might have a little extra damage. We just aren't sure yet, but xrays will let us know," Jurina explained.
The humane society is says it's a miracle Holly's even still alive under the care of her previous owner.
"How she survived, I don't rightly now. He (the owner) even quoted to the agent the he thought for a few days, she was going to die," Jurina said. "She seems very alert, very playful, very loving and trusting. Which when you look at her background, it's very surprising how affectionate she is."
Vets expect Holly to survive after she recovers from surgery. In about 6 to 8 weeks she'll be up for adoption, which the humane society expects to be a short process.
The Columbiana Humane agent is still investigating the case. They haven't filed any charges against the owner yet.
