Last year the Children's Museum of the Valley changed its name to the Children's Center for Science and Technology.

Now, in 2010 it's preparing for a big move from East Boardman Street.

Monday, the center unveiled a brand new logo at its brand new location: the McCrory building on Central Square.

"The exhibits in the new facility will be much more sophisticated, much more focused on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics," said Executive Director Suzanne Barbati.

That's a focus that fits in perfectly with Youngstown State University's STEM college. Professors from the various STEM departments are currently helping develop the exhibits.

"The goal is to make that reconnection," said Martin Abraham, Dean of YSU's STEM College. "Make the kids have that opportunity to learn science and math but have fun doing it."

The new children's center even means the littlest Valley residents can be involved in Congressman Tim Ryan's vision for a "Tech Belt."

"So we have a pipeline," said Ryan. "So our kids get interested now as Martin said, and they go all through school excited about future prospects."

Prospects that include a revitalized downtown.

"We always saw ourselves as a downtown entity," said Ronald Faniro, board president. "We felt ourselves as one of the cultural centers of downtown."

The board of directors hopes by doubling the size of the facility, they can attract children and their families from all over the region to downtown.

"I'm hoping to have one closer to home, hands on for the kids so they can go someplace and learn and be away from the monotony of home sometimes," said Jamie Wilson, of Hermitage.

The board is hoping to raise $1.5 million for the new children's center, which is set to open this fall.
