It was only two days ago that kids all around the Valley collected bags of candy while trick or treating.  And Monday, many of them gave it all back for some cash.

While the dentist's office is one of the last places that you would expect to see the treats, the staff at Drs. Martuccio and Bauer Orthodontic Office in Howland saw hundreds of pounds it during a candy buyback event for their patients and the community.

It wats all in an effort to help prevent bracket breakage and to help the country's troops.

The two said it's their goal to encourage kids to not eat the hard, chewy, sticky candy especially during the holidays. During the buyback, kids got $1 for every pound of candy they brought in. That candy will now be shipped to troops overseas as part of Operation Gratitude, based in California.

Many of the kids who donated candy, also took the time to sign cards and pictures that will be sent to the troops as well.

The office staff said they are amazed at the amount of support they've received from the community, many of whom donated money and free candy. Before the event began at 5 p.m., the office already had been given 60 pounds of candy.

When all was all said and done, the office gave out about $400, and collected nearly 400 pounds of candy in only two hours.
