The city of Campbell appears to have an arsonist on the loose. There have been four fires intentionally set in just the last two weeks.

One fire took place last week at a Gordon Street home that was intentionally burned to the ground. It was the location of the rape last month of a Campbell High School student. Since then there have been two more fires just blocks away from that blaze, and they've both been intentionally set.

Each of the fires were at vacant structures, and in several areas of the city there are burned remains from similar fires.

Campbell Fire Chief Nick Hrelec said the fires have always been an issue, but they appear to be getting worse. Catching those responsible is not easy.

"If there was a solution, I'm sure it would have been done already," Hrelec said. "We need people to get involved, number one. I mean, they have to be aware of their surroundings, what's going on in their neighborhood. They can't always turn a blind eye to it."

Aside from the Gordon Street fire, there was another arson on Coitsville Road about two weeks ago. Some of the fires have broken out during the day, and Hrelec said he hopes residents can keep their eyes open to help catch the person or people setting them.
