Ohio's answer to Punxsutawney Phil is predicting a shorter winter — not that there's been much winter to speak of.

WMRN radio reports that Ohio groundhog Buckeye Chuck failed to see his shadow at dawn on Thursday under overcast skies in the central Ohio city of Marion. According to legend, no shadow means spring will arrive early.

Winter has barely made an appearance in Ohio. Temperatures have been warmer than normal and most spots have seen much less snow than usual.

Meanwhile in Punxsutawney, Phil did see his shadow on Thursday, forecasting six more weeks of winter.

The Groundhog Day tradition comes from a German superstition that calls for bad weather if an animal casts a shadow on Feb. 2, the Christian holiday of Candlemas.

I love Groundhog's Day so much that I named a local rodent Millicent Midlothian. Since the day was overcast, I assume "Mid Milly" did not see her shadow, thus predicting an early Spring for the south side of Youngstown.

Wow, I think this is great, a community of people all pulling together to have a great time once a Year, weather the groundhog is right or wrong it still is a good clean time for everyone to get together and for a few hours just forget about all your troubles and just have some fun. i think i might go there next year and see what all the partying and tradition is all about for myself.

Ya'know, this groundhog day thing wasn't supposed to get out of hand. Just look at what's happened! It's become a major distraction for the entire country! Punksy Phil gets and his top-hatted twits get more attention than our favorite holiday presidents. More people know of Phil than know their own local or state legislators. Pathetic, really. And consider that, at day's end, we still can't remember if seeing the shadow gets us an early Spring or six more weeks of Winter. ******* For once I'd like to see an investigative report on the small-town, back-door political machinations that must occur to see who gets the coveted, nationally recognized positions in the bright lights on stage either side of the groundhog's stump. When you think of the sneaky tactics people use to get aboard PTA committees or school boards or in kids' Little League, those must pale when compared to tactics used to be a Punksy Phil roady.
