Girard contractor John Sorokach started his Wednesday morning like he normally does.

He stopped at a gas station to get some smokes and a coffee, but instead of a normal day he ended up on a wild ride in the back of his own pick-up truck.

Sorokach said he stopped at the gas station around 7:30 a.m. When he was inside, he looked out the window and saw his truck rolling backwards. Thinking he left the vehicle in neutral, he ran out and tried to get in the front seat, only to find the door locked and a man sitting inside beginning to drive away.

"I looked in, you could see him," Sorokach said. "I tried to stop him. When he wouldn't open the door, I got right in the bed."

And that's when the adventure began. Sorokach grabbed his cell phone so police could catch up with them.

And Sam Mosca, a security officer at the Girard Muncipal Building, and who was on his way to work, said he pulled on Liberty Street near the gas station and saw the whole thing.

"There is a guy in the back bouncing around," said Mosca. "I didn't realize what was going on."

Even though police do not advise someone jumping in the back of a stolen truck, Sorokach said he did what he felt he had to do.

"This is my life here, this is all I do," he said. "It is how I make my money. If that is gone, I wouldn't know what to do."

With Sorokach letting police know which way the truck was traveling, they were able to stop it a short time later on Mosier Road. They arrested Matthew McCale and charged him with receiving stolen property. He is being held in the Trumbull County Jail.

Sorokach, who was not hurt, said he is grateful to Girard dispatcher Tim O'Neil and police Capt. Chris O'Brien.

Brittnee, It took a lot of courage to post your thoughts and I am very grateful that no gun was involved. And I admire John for his actions because he just could not afford to lose what belongs to him. We live in a cruel world and alcohol and drugs is used as an escape from the real world, and it surely is not the way to cope, but the problem is real. Sending your father to prison does not solve the real issues that are behind your fathers problems. And our justice system is quick to do so, however, what about rehabilitation for the weak, the one's that cannot cope? I am one that is not so quick to pass someone aside, because when it comes down to it, they are a human being crying out for help. Again, I am very glad John was not injured thru this episode, and I hope for your sake and your family that Matt seeks the help that is really needed. And just maybe this will make him realize that he just cannot continue to live like this. And most importantly, I hope your family sticks together on this, because without family you are NOTHING...

God Bless you, Brittnee. It is obvious your Dad did something right. Look at the wonderful, brave daughter he raised. I agree with "lovemygsd." You did nothing wrong and don't owe anyone an apology. I do, however, respect and admire you for the courage and caring you showed by posting your comment. It speaks volumes about the values and principles you were raised on. You and your family will be in my thoughts and in my prayers. I hope your dad gets the help he needs before someone does get hurt. I have learned one very important lesson in life and it holds true in every situation, including yours...You cannot control what other people do. You can only control the way you react to what they do. Please continue to react in the manner in which you have been...to be strong, positive and insistent on not going down the same path that your father has chosen. I hope your dad finds his way back to you and your family. God Bless!

Brittnee McCale, My Exhusband Was just like you father in Many ways, Not stealing but first Alcohol Then Crack , I had him going to rehap, he stopped drinking just to go to crack. I had to turn my back & walk away. They have to hit rock bottom to get help, No one Can Help them but themselves. Been there. Thank God My Dad Never Drank. 7 1/2 yrs ago he was beat to death, they wanted his money these were his friends he thought. His Drug Buddies. Its Worse hurting your Kids over your Drug Problems. YOU MY DEAR NEED TO GO TO DRUG COUNSELING TO DEAL WITH WHAT YOU FEEL, Because Your Indanger of ending like him especially if you grew up seeing this. It teachers you strength, but it teachers you how to handle your feeling and your feelings for your dad. YOU OWE NO ONE An APOLOGY, You Did Nothing Wrong . You shouldnt have to go threw life feeling sorry for what your dad did to someone else. You DAd Has To be Accountable for his actions. You Dad Has to admit he has a problem and admit himself to get help. He also has to stay away from ALL HIS DRUG FRIEND 100%. TOUGH LOVE IS TO WALK AWAY FROM IT ALL. YOU WILL NOT TALK TO HIM UNLESS HE IS SOBER AND GETS HELP. DONT EVER Apolgize For Him, ITS NOT YOUR FAULT YOUR DAD IS WEAK. YOU BE STRONG AND TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF. If You Have Any Brother or Sisters Try to Keep them Drug Free. You All Deserve BETTER. Judy

My name is Brittnee McCale and I am the daughter of Matthew McCale. I want to start by saying that my Dad is a very sick man. Please everyone know- under the blindfold of drugs a person does not function as they normally would. Yes, my dad is struggling with a very bad addiction and things have clearly escalated to an extremely scary level for me and my family. We are so very sorry for the pain that he has caused our community. We've tried to help him in every way that we could think of but drugs will always win. I am hoping that my Dad does get sentenced to a long term prision vsit because at this point I feel it's either prision or death. I am thankful that no one got hurt, and offer a million apologies on my fathers behalf. No one of you know how deeply this has effected me and my family. There is no excuse for his behavior but I hope in reading this I can speak for the man that we all have known and loved, a wonderful amazing man who loves with all his heart and would never have done this if it was really him. I can't even allow myself to think that this is really my Dad. It's just a drug. So again, I am not trying to make any excuses for him, my highest hopes put him in jail for years to come. And hopefully with that I get my father back.

How exactly is he charged with receiving stolen property and not grand theft and attempted murder. Put this turd behind bars with some real charges. Receiving stolen property... slap on wrist... out on probation. Prosecutor my a**!

Way to go JJ! This is my brother who works so hard for his family. I hope the bum who tried to steal food off of his table does alot of time behind bars. Hopefully our justice system makes an example of this guy and throws the book at him! He does not deserve to walk our streets. I am so very proud to call this man my brother!
