Today’s seniors are living longer and the same can be said for our pets.

According to an article by Jonathan Lewis of COOL Pet Consulting in St. Petersburg, Fla., the ever-increasing population of older pets also increases the demand for pharmaceuticals to treat aging animals.

Lewis’ article, posted Tuesday on ExpertClick.com reported that this increasing demand causes concerns in the veterinary community over the safety of medicines given to pets.

The article stated that most-noted factors compromising the safety of pet pharmaceuticals are accelerated drug development, decreased oversight, outsourcing and layoffs throughout the manufacturing industry.

“The costs of development, regulatory compliance, manufacturing, and distribution is nearly unparalleled as compared to other industries,” Lewis wrote. “In the current economic state and increased competition, veterinary drug companies are cutting costs wherever possible in order to remain competitive and still meet market demand.”

Lewis reported that many veterinarians have recently been exploring the viability of natural and holistic alternatives. One web site, naturalcuresfordogs.org, offers natural and holistic remedies and therapies for your pet.

The not-for-profit web site is made up of an all-volunteer veterinary staff. They state that they are for health conscious dogs and their owners, and welcome questions via email: info@naturalcuresfordogs.org.
