Youngstown State rallied from an 11-point deficit to beat North Dakota State 39-35 in the 2009 regular season finale. Brandon Summers threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Dominique Barnes with 22 seconds left to seal the victory. The touchdown pass capped off a 14-play, 70-yard drive for the Penguins. Summers threw for 259 yards and three touchdowns, two of them to Barnes. The Penguins also scored on a 79-yard blocked field goal return by Lenny Wicks in the second quarter. Pat Paschall, who came in as the leading rusher in the Football Championship Subdivision, led North Dakota State with 140 yards on the ground and three touchdowns. Quarterback Jose Mohler threw for 238 yards and two touchdowns for the Bison (3-8, 2-6).
The Penguins end the season with a record of 6-5 and 4-4 in Missouri Valley Conference action, while the Bison finish 3-8 overall and 2-6 in conference play.
